About the Winemakers
Suzaan + Chris Alheit

Chris and Suzaan Alheit are the heart and hands behind Alheit Vineyards. They met while studying winemaking at Stellenbosch University, fell in love, and spent years travelling the globe chasing harvests before returning to the Cape with the mission to capture the true sense of South Africa in wine. Their philosophy is simple and steadfast: to find the voice in the land, not the mark of the winemaker. They believe that the Cape’s vinous heritage is worth protecting - that dry farming, bush vines and so-called “ordinary grapes” are in fact extraordinary. From their thoughtful farming practices to their stripped-back cellar work, every step is guided by integrity, respect for the land, and a quiet belief in the power of simplicity.

The Winery
Alheit Vineyards

Alheit Vineyards has become one of the most respected producers in South Africa’s new wave of terroir-driven winemaking. Founded in 2010 by Chris and Suzaan Alheit, the winery is based at Hemelrand Farm on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge - a stunning, cold, windswept landscape where they’ve been developing their project from the ground up. Best known for their flagship ‘Cartology’, Alheit’s wines celebrate dry-farmed bush vines, honest winemaking, and the often-overlooked brilliance of South Africa’s old vineyards. They work closely with a network of passionate growers across the Cape, and also farm their own site, Nuwedam, in the Paardeberg. In the winery, it’s all about transparency: wild ferments, old barrels, no flashy techniques - just a deep trust in the fruit and the land it comes from.
